It is appropriate to consider the principles of a leader from that bridging point where East meets West; where the Christian world meets the Muslim world; where Asia meets Europe.

Each year on 10 November at 9.05hr, Turks stop; they leave their vehicles, they stand in silence and remembrance. This is the anniversary of the death of Ataturk.

The first of many Ataturk portraits produced by NPP was completed in 1997. At the beginning of 2001, the 3.5m x 2m Ataturk Gulumsuyor-Ataturk Smiles, as shown above, was installed at The Lutfi Kirdar International Conference & Exhibition Centre. It was generally unusual to see portraits of Ataturk smiling.

In 2006 NPP donated an Ataturk portrait to the Istanbul Police Force in the presence of Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas, Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler and Istanbul Chief of Police Celalettin Cerrah.

In 2006 NPP were commissioned by ATU to produced Ataturk’s Eyes for Esenboga Airport which serves the nation's capital Ankara. The Eyes image has been produced for posters, T-shirts and to publicly commemorate national days.

Why did an Englishman paint Ataturk? NPP's first portrait of Ataturk was purely a fun challenge in response to so many Ataturk portraits displayed throughout the country which tended to appear rather dour. One of the definitive principles of Ataturk’s reforms was the fundamental right of freedom of conscious. By painting Ataturk, it is hoped to highlight a character and his principles to many who have little or no understanding of what Turkey is today or was yesterday.

Ataturk’s image is a powerful one symbolising a vision of national unity, education, art, science and liberty for both man and womankind alike. He paid keen attention to literature, music, fashion and the arts and fully appreciated the innovations and philosophies inspired by such.

Among my favourite quotes from Ataturk is:
"Freedom consists of man's ability to do what he thinks and desires without any influence or intervention by others. This is the broadest definition of the concept. Mankind has never attained liberty to this extent and never will because as is known, men are creations of nature and nature itself is not absolutely free either; it is subject to universal laws."
Ataturk c.1930

After Atatürk's speech in 1933, 10 years after the 1923 declaration of independence for The Republic of Turkey, he penned only one other sentence:
"When all the things I say become true, there is only one thing I want from you and all the world: (Please) Remember me."

From a blog called Anti Kemalist:
British Newspaper Article On Mustafa Kemal and Sir Percy Lorraine
http://antikemalist.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Portraits in chronological order.......

NPP Ataturk

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
“Freedom consists of man’s ability to do what he thinks and desires without any influence or intervention by others. This is the broadest definition of the concept. Mankind has never attained liberty to this extent and never will because as is known, men are creations of nature and nature itself is not absolutely free either; it is subject to universal laws.”
Ataturk c.1930

“The Republic of Turkey has no official religion. In the administration of the state, all laws and regulations are enacted and applied in accordance with the basis, the form and the mundane needs science provides to contemporary civilizations. Since the concept of religion relates to personal conviction, the republic considers the separation of religious ideas from state and world affairs and from politics as the principle factor in the success of the contemporary progress of our nation.”
Ataturk c.1930

“The Turkish state is secular. Every individual reaching majority is free in choosing his or her religion.”
Ataturk c.1930
"We are not taking up Western civilization saying let’s make an imitation. The things that we see as good and suitable for our own structure we are adopting for the level of world civilization.”
Ataturk c.1928

“Religion is an issue of conscience. Everyone is free to conform to the commands of their conscience. We show respect for religion. We are not against a way of thinking or thoughts. We are only trying to not to mix religious affairs with the affairs of the nation and the state. We are avoiding reactionary actions that are based on evil intent and deeds.”
Ataturk c.1926

“Every individual has the rights and freedoms to think what he wants, to believe what he wants, to possess a political opinion that is unique to himself and to undertake or not undertake the requirements of the religion he has chosen. No one’s ideas or conscience can be dominated.”
Ataturk c.1925

“Our religion is the most reasonable and natural of all, and that is the reason why it is the most recently established religion. For a religion to be natural it must conform to reason, science, technology and logic. Our religion fully conforms to all of these.”
Ataturk c.1923

“A nation without art has lost one of its lifelines”
Ataturk c.1923

“I lived in such fear of losing you my little Mustafa. When news came of your death sentence my heart failed me and I took to my bed. Upon my prayer mat I prayed to God. But now I am happy. The grief and fear have passed. Those who like him tend to adore him. Those who are not so fond of the man can tend toward loathing. The following information presents alternative views and not necessarily the views of NPP, as some responses seem to think...

I first pained Ataturk as a fun challenge and then clients paid me to do it again and again. I like the words I have read attributed to Ataturk. Rarely have I found the principles of a world leader which make as much common sense regarding day to day life. Indeed, I find some of his sayings excellent rules for life. However, there are alternative views; I have read and heard all kinds of allegations pro and against Ataturk and I want to outline some here.

For example, there are suggestions he was interested in the legend of the Ancients of Mu; Mu is the name of a hypothetical lost continent, which is thought to have been located in the Pacific Ocean before it sank beneath the waters, similar to Atlantis and Lemuria, with which it is sometimes identified. In the late 1930s, Ataturk promoted research on Mu and other lost continents, in the hope of establishing connections between the Turkish civilization and other ancient cultures, such as the Uyghur, India, Maya and Aztecs. For me this is most interesting, for others utter nonsense.

There are those who suggest he was a mason along with other historical luminaries...
http://abbey.lodge.org.uk/famous-masons.htm

Some believe he destroyed the Turkish culture and others who believe he helped galvanise it.

Some believe he is was the antithesis of a pious Muslim religion, others have suggested to me he was directly descended from the Prophet Mohammed.

So, there are many contradictions and accusations, hence it is appropriate to include the alternative viewpoint. It is a fact that to express anti-Ataturk sentiment has been punishable under Turkish Republic law and this is something I feel strongly against. Indeed, the current PM Erdogan was imprisoned for speaking publicly against the secular republic using religious overtones. Of course, his imprisonment probably helped galvanise support for his later election as PM. Bans and prohibition are such ridiculous policies.

The following text is adapted from an article by By Hillel Halkin, titled:
"It's My Secret Prayer, Too," He Confessed
published 28 January 1994 in New York based Jewish newspaper The Forward http://www.forward.com/
It is alleged that Ataturk was of Spanish Jewish Ancestry; his ancestors fled Spain during the Spanish Inquisition. So called Zionist Rabbi Dr. Joachim Prinz writes about the secret Jewish community of Selanik, where Mustafa Kemal was born...
http://www.radioislam.org/islam/english/jewishp/turkey/secretjews-prinz.htm
It is suggested that many of the policies of Ataturk support claims that he was Jewish and that these 'secret Jews', known as Doenmehs, took over the Ottoman Empire, disintegrated it, and then established the new Turkish Republic regime. Mustafa Kemal, was allegedly an ardent Doenmehjew. In order to conceal his Doenmeh identity, he adopted the last name of "Ataturk", which means "Father of Turks" and Turkey is still ruled and governed by this secret Jews curriculum taught in schools today as fabricated by the newly established Jewish and freemasonic regime. After 'Jewish dictator' 'British agent' Mustafa Kemal and his followers took over the power in Turkey in 1923, they abolished the Caliphate, outlawed the Islamic alphabet, turned Mosques into museums, banned women from wearing the hijab and Islamic dress code, executed many Muslims under disguise of westernization and advancement, gave non-Muslim minorities their full freedom; encouraged and even forced Muslims to imitate western people. These reforms were orchestrated by higher Jewish and western powers manipulating agent Ataturk, since he was was merely a puppet in the hands of powerful Zionists. Once the students graduate from the high school or university, they are impelled to admire and respect Ataturk to such an extent, they do not even question his reforms nor dare to do so due to the state laws.

However, I will end this post with a quote by Ataturk:
“Our religion is the most reasonable and natural of all, and that is the reason why it is the most recently established religion. For a religion to be natural it must conform to reason, science, technology and logic. Our religion fully conforms to all of these.” Ataturk c.1923

You make your own mind up.

2001 I.C.E.C. Ataturk Gulumsuyor

January 2001 The Strategic Review Group organised this Anglo-Turk collaboration bringing together English artist Ned Pamphilon and The Lutfi Kirdar Conference and Exhibition Centre to produce:

ATATURK GULUMSUYOR - ATATURK SMILES

“Let’s paint a hero of cinematic proportions, the stuff of legends, the type of story one might think a little far-fetched had it not actually happened.
Add the passion of Van Gogh, the modernity of Andy Warhol and the energy of Rolf Harris, raise a glass and look into those blue eyes. Then wish in the possibility of that familiar stern profile gently cracking to the beginnings of a smile.
We can all dream; he did and a nation was born – dreams are what the real stuff’s made of!”
Ned Pamphilon 2001

NPP Ataturk

Ataturk Gulumsuyor, a painting donated to The I.C.E.C. by NPP, treats a traditional image of the founder of The Turkish Republic with a contemporary style.

Possibly the largest (3.5m x 2m) original Ataturk portrait of its type, this welcome addition of colour and grandeur to the main foyer of the Lutfi Kirdar complex keeps it up-to-date with new neighbour, The Rumeli Fair and Exhibition Hall, thanks largely to the foresight of I.C.E.C. General Manager Orhan Sanus.

Ataturk was very aware of his public profile and veered toward a serious image portraying his serious intentions. In this case, however, the artist has captured a rare glimpse of the man with a smile in his eyes and his heart – the real Ataturk. It is perhaps poetic irony that an Englishman should produce Ataturk Gulumsüyor and this may be viewed as another small yet positive step forward in Anglo-Turk relations.

Ataturk’s image is a powerful one symbolising a vision of national unity, education, art, science and liberty for both man and womankind alike. He paid keen attention to literature, music, fashion and the arts and fully appreciated the innovations and philosophies inspired by such:

“A nation without art has lost one of its lifelines” Ataturk c.1923

ATATURK GULUMSUYOR is dedicated to Christopher Lawrence

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nppataturk.blogspot.com/2001/01/2001-icec-ataturk-gulumsuyor.html' title='2001 I.C.E.C.
